History of Scottish Gin

Scotland produces the vast majority of gin made in the United Kingdom including some of the best selling bands including Gordon's (the biggest selling gin in the world) Hendrick’s and Tanqueray.

The rise in craft gin distilling began in 2009 following a legal battle with the UK tax authority which resulted in business winning the right to distil small scale quantities of spirit rather than on an industrial scale.

Scotch whisky distillers started producing there own gin from 2010. Caorunn from Balmenach distillery in the Highlands, The Botanist is distilled at Bruichladdich distiller on Islay, Harris Distillery in Outer Herbrideas and Strathern Distillery in rural Perthshire makes Rock Rose.

Scotland's capital city Edinburgh, plays a major role in craft gin distilling, famous brands including Edinburgh Gin, Daffy's Gin, Pickering's of Summerhall and Electric Spirit in Leith are all based in the city.
