The Whisky Barrel is delighted to present the second small batch release of The Whisky Barrel ORIGINALS®. Our very own exclusive scotch whisky label bottling single casks from some of Scotland’s finest distilleries.
Following the launch of the inaugural release in November 2019, we are kicking off 2020 with two new bottlings, from Balblair and Bunnahabhain distilleries: Balblair, 10 Year Old, 2009, #TWB1008 and Staoisha (Bunnahabhain), 6 Year Old, 2013, #TWB1009.
Independent Balblair Whisky
We are very excited about releasing this for several reasons. Firstly, it just very good! Secondly, it is not often that independently bottled Balblair whisky comes around. Thirdly, this is the first Highland whisky we have released under TWB Originals® so we’re giving the lovely purple, heathery Highland label colour an outing.
This Balblair was distilled in September 2009. Balblair distillery is a well-loved and highly regarded distillery. A classic distillery with a red brick chimney, pagodas roofs and dunnage warehouses. And a proper Highland distillery way up on the Dornoch Firth.
A bit of a rarity, this 10 Year Old Balblair ORIGINALS®, was matured in a first fill Oloroso Hogshead cask. Bottled in 2019 it yielded just 284 bottles at a superb cask strength 59.4%. The sherry cask has worked wonders here. Bringing to the Balblair character, orange peel, cinnamon and honey. A light spiciness, citrus bursts, barley, oak and a wee chilli heat. A creamy character dotted with pepper and lovely Dundee Marmalade note.

Staoisha Whisky, Formerly Known as Bunnahabhain
Staoish – this is the peated version of Bunnahabhain whisky that appears in the independent whisky scene. Named after Lake Staoisha not far from the distillery on Islay. This is a total contrast to the wonderfully sherried Bunnahbhain from our first ORIGINALS® release:- heavy sherried heaven! Here we have a youthful Bourbon cask matured single cask packing plenty of punch!
Distilled October 2013 and bottled 2019, this is a bit of a peatbomb. Peat smoke jump up the nose with minerals, brine and a touch of chocolate and vanilla. More sea salt hits the palate with lovely bonfire smoke, toasted oak and some citrus and vanilla. The finish is beautifully oily, full of tobacco, chocolate and a lovely smokey cloud. Offers a lot for its youth.
